What Influences Teachers and Students to Use Technology in the Classroom?

As technology grows around us in everyday life, classroom life keeps the pace. Devices that students may be using at home start to become a part of their education, and this can be effective in motivating positive work improvement or increasing engagement. Teachers are influenced to use technology in the classroom as that technology is provided to them by their schools. Students, who are accustomed to already using technology in the home, are influenced to use it in the classroom because it is familiar to them. Classrooms change and advance technologically, and they do so to match the growth in everyday society.

The ISTE standards that have been established are, in my opinion, extremely important in the effort to integrate technology fully into the classroom. They will help students use the technology available to them as a tool rather than a hinderance. I think that the most meaningful standard to me would be to be a creative communicator. Since I was in elementary school, I have been using technology to share my ideas in countless ways. My siblings and I would make movies, sometimes for school and often for our own enjoyment. As I have grown up, much newer and more advanced technology have been incorporated into my life and learning. I went from the world of flip phones and disposable cameras to iPods then iPhones then iPads (and the list goes on). I have always loved diving deep into creative school projects, but some of my favorites were those that I got to film and edit with my friends. I have also used social media on many occasions to communicate with other students and find help on problems when I needed it. If I could work on one of these standards, it would be becoming a global collaborator. I have used technology in many ways on a local scale, but I have never tried to gain perspectives from those in different countries than me, and I feel like I'm missing out on a potentially enriching experience.

I think that the term "digital native" is very fitting for my generation. We were born into a world with technology. I have been using computers in the classroom environment since at least third grade, and technology has been an integral part of my education. Through phones, computers, and even iPads, my teachers have taught many different lesson plans in unique and memorable ways that improved my understanding. As seen through my parents and some of my teachers, there is a learning gap for people not born into a technological environment. I helped guide both of my parents through new use of technology, especially in their phone use. I remember when my dad had a Blackberry, and it was a good phone to have for work at the time. Now he has integrated his iPhone into his daily routine, even responding to mail through speech-to-text applications while driving. Many of my teachers have used technology well in the classroom, but some didn't have a firm enough understanding of the new technology they were using to actually properly teach us. One of my current professors doesn't know how to use Canvas to fit our classroom needs. The divide between digital natives and digital immigrants is very apparent in the school environment. 1. Honestly proud of your dad for sorting out speech to text! My parents still ask questions about easy stuff all the time, but I love them all the same lol :)
