Blog Journal 6

I'm observing a class at FSUS, so I thought it would be a good idea to look at their website. I looked at the teacher page of the teacher I observe, Ms. Savage Campbell, as well as those of a few other teachers in the high school English department there. Ms. Campbell's page has a welcome section, a section with information about her, and a section with information about the course. The course info section was similar to a syllabus, and it provided a lot of the necessary information for student conduct in the class. At the bottom of the section, there is a link to a "Google Folder" that is regularly updated by Ms. Campbell with the assignments done in class so that students who are absent can catch up. Looking at another teacher's site (she teaches AP Lit and English 2 Honors), I saw that she put passwords and information for students to access Remind groups and Google Classrooms. Overall these sites showed the important information that students needed at the beginning of the year and they continue to update to fit students' needs now.

Even solely based on the chrome apps that we looked at today in class, I realized how many resources are available to make the teaching process far more efficient. The extension I found today, "Read Up", is a tool I would definitely use in the classroom to help me pick the reading materials for my students. I'm not yet sure if I want to teach middle school or high school, so having an extension that tells me the reading level of the books I'm looking at would be helpful if I ever shift grade levels and don't know what material to teach. There are hundreds of other resources just like this readily available to me, and as a teacher I would research and find materials to make my process for forming lesson plans more efficient and tools to make the presentation of my plans more entertaining.

In the technology sandbox, we saw tons of different tools that would be easily integrated in the classroom. For me, I want to consider them in the context of teaching an English class because I plan on teaching English myself. I think that the use of VR in the classroom would be great to help students visualize the stories they are reading. While reading in class, I could talk to the class about the setting of the story they're reading but then provide them with an immersive view of that setting in VR as well. Giving the students the opportunity to place themselves in the story could help them to connect more to the characters that they are reading about. The 3D printer could also be used for a similar purpose; prints of the physical characteristics of a setting or of the characters themselves could be used in the classroom for students to see a real-life representation of what they're reading.
